About our hearing assessments

If you find it hard to understand conversations, need to concentrate more when people speak, or are avoiding social interactions, you may be experiencing a hearing loss. Many justify this by saying "people mumble" or that "they just need to focus more". But these are usually the early signs.

Accepting hearing loss can be an emotional journey, especially when we are active in other areas of life, and often associate hearing loss with aging. At Southern Hearing Excellence, we cater to individuals at various stages of this journey by providing a range of assessments. For those unsure about needing hearing aids, we offer a free, no-obligation Hearing Checkup to evaluate your hearing and discuss your options—perfect for a casual chat about your hearing.

If you suspect hearing loss and are ready for testing, we offer both a Standard and Comprehensive Hearing Assessment. These assessments evaluate your hearing thresholds through Pure Tone Audiometry and include additional tests for your eardrum's integrity, middle ear function, and live speech testing. This helps us determine if you have hearing loss, and if so, its extent. By using a complete range of audiological procedures, we can confirm hearing loss and identify its cause for appropriate treatment.

We recommend that individuals attending Standard Hearing Assessments and Comprehensive Hearing Assessments bring their family members to the appointment. When dealing with hearing loss, those closest to us often perceive changes more acutely than we might ourselves. Including family in this process not only provides a broader understanding of your hearing situation, but also offers valuable insights into how your hearing needs align with your family dynamics.

Audiological tests WE USE

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a diagnostic tool for assessing middle ear function. It measures eardrum movement, revealing how effectively sound is transmitted and providing insights into Eustachian Tube function. This test is crucial for distinguishing conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and the effects of fluid on hearing.

Pure tone audiometry

Pure tone audiometry (PTA) tests pure tones at specific frequencies, vital for understanding speech and environmental sounds. During the test, tones are played through earphones, inserts, or bone conduction devices to measure the softest sounds detectable in decibels (dB). Results are charted on an audiogram showing frequency-specific bands.

Video otoscopy

Video otoscopy uses a video imaging device to display the ear canal and eardrum on a computer screen, offering a clear image for the audiologist. This technique is superior to non-video otoscopy due to improved clarity for accurate detection of abnormalities. It also serves as an effective counseling tool.

Speech testing

Speech testing evaluates a person's speech comprehension ability, measuring the minimum threshold for speech discrimination. Our assessments include testing in quiet and noisy environments, offering insights into everyday speech processing. It's arguably the most practical part of the audiology test battery.
